Memorial for Spencer the Labrador Retriever Mix

Memorial photo of Labrador Retriever Mix sitting happily in grass Photo credit @Rebobd Instagram. A long-term patient of mine named Spencer recently passed away. I first got to know Spencer and his family when he moved from New York to Los Angeles in 2013. I knew him during his healthier times when his mobility was quite good, despite having had knee surgery and osteoarthritis, and was there until the end when his mobility had declined to the degree that it was affecting his quality of life.
Spencer’s human caretakers, David and Jeni, created this touching memorial:
Today the Bobers said good-bye to our beloved Spencer. I'm filled with both sadness and gratitude; for while a part of us will go with our beloved dog, I'm equally thankful for the gifts bestowed upon us by this wonderful being. On a personal level, he taught me more about myself through his honesty and purity of spirit than any human has or will.
Spencer led me to my wife and fatherhood. He paved the way for that and so much more. So we'll both shed a tear and rejoice in the good fortune to have had the privilege of sharing our lives with him these past 13 years. People who knew Spencer used to tell me he was the luckiest dog in the world. They were wrong, we were the lucky ones; the dog of a lifetime. What a blessing.
Although Spencer is no longer with us, the impact he had on the lives of those who knew him will be always be remembered.
