Dr. Patrick Covers Salmonella Risks for Pets and Humans on Talkin' Pets

Patrick Mahaney Cardiff 2015Recently, I appeared on Talkin' Pets with Jon Patch to discuss the risks that pathogenic bacteria like Salmonella pose to both pets and humans. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a recall of Nylabone's Puppy Starter Pack due to Salmonella health risk, which is a common reason pet foods and treats are recalled as displayed on the FDA's Recalls and Withdrawals webpage. Concern for pathogenic bacteria contamination is one of the reasons I suggest my clients feed their dogs and cats foods that are manufactured following human-grade instead of feed-grade standards. Feed-grade production permits lower-quality ingredients potentially containing contaminants (bacteria, mold based toxins, heavy metals, pesticides, etc.) to enter foods or treats in greater quantities than human-grade foods. Such is why I recommend foods like Lucky Dog Cuisine, and home-prepared diets for my patients. Have you or your pet been suspected or known to be sickened by Salmonella or other food-related ailments? Please share your perspective in the comments section. Thank you for reading this article.
