I once heard it said that “If you know how many you have, you don’t have enough.”

Seriously though, one needs to be able to afford a doctor’s care in the awful circumstance that they all become ill at the same time. (Think: something contagious) One needs to be able to afford routine checkups and things like dentals when needed.

One also needs to be able to give individual attention to each pet. With dogs, I’m thinking probably time to keep them up-to-date on their training.

Remembering, of course, that dogs are more labor intensive than cats.

I’ve had lots of cats. I’ve had very few cats. I currently have three and they are a handful.
