Introduction to Cardiff's Blog

Photo of Dr Patrick Mahaney Cardiff by Russell Baer Photography Greetings! I’m Dr. Patrick Mahaney. Pictured with me is Cardiff, my Welsh Terrier. Cardiff is my muse, my trusted companion, and the true motivating force for my veterinary practice.

Cardiff suffers from Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia — yes, it’s a mouthful. The abbreviation IMHA is so much easier to pronounce. IMHA is a chronic, typically fatal illness where the immune system destroys the body’s red blood cells.

I take an integrative approach to Cardiff’s treatment by using a combination of Western (conventional) and Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM).

The Western approach utilizes immunosuppressive drugs to keep the immune system from being over-reactive. The TCVM technique relies on administering Chinese herbs and other supplements, along with acupuncture and/or acupressure treatment, to augment the health of all body systems. The combination of Western and TCVM has been the key to managing Cardiff’s (and many of my patient’s) disease.
